64th Street: A Detective Story is a beat 'em up arcade game from 1992, published by Jaleco. It launched in Japan in March of that year and in North America later in 1992. The story follows two private detectives—Rick, a calm and intelligent 35-year-old agency manager, and Allen, his 19-year-old reformed delinquent protégé with a short temper. They are hired by an exhausted rich man whose daughter has been kidnapped by an evil corporation called the Legacy organization. After noticing a classified ad with phrasing similar to the kidnappers' letter, the detectives realize the text is a secret code used by crime lords. They fight through six stages, starting in a typical Double Dragon/Final Fight style before shifting into a steampunk setting that culminates in a blimp battle.
Gameplay lets one or two players choose between Rick and Allen, each with different fighting styles. Players beat up criminals, throw enemies into the background to find special items, and face bosses with strange special attacks. Enemies wear costumes ranging from 1980s hip-hop gear to pirate outfits.
In October 2020, Hamster Corporation released 64th Street outside Japan for the first time as part of its Arcade Archives series on Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4.

Lore & Background
The story begins at 64th Street with two protagonists: Rick (Anderson), a calm and intelligent 35-year-old professional private detective and manager of the detective agency; and Allen (Tombs), a 19-year-old reformed delinquent trained by Rick, who is short-tempered and violent when angry. An evil corporation known as the Legacy organization kidnaps the daughter of a mid-aged rich man and leaves a letter explaining why. Late one night, the exhausted rich man rushes into the detectives' office asking for help and gives them the letter. The next day, Allen notices a classified ad with similar sentence structure to the letter. Rick tells him to look cautiously at both, and they realize the writing is a secret code understood only by certain crime lords. They then struggle toward the main base of the Legacy organization to find the truth and save the daughter. The setting later takes on a steampunk feel, culminating in a battle inside a blimp.
Reader's Guide
64th Street is a representative example of the early 1990s arcade beat 'em up genre, following the template set by Double Dragon and Final Fight. Its significance lies in its two-player cooperative gameplay, distinct fighting styles for each protagonist, and the use of environmental destruction to find special items. The game's plot, involving a secret code in a classified ad and a steampunk blimp finale, adds narrative depth uncommon in the genre at the time. Its legacy includes spawning a series of beat 'em ups for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System titled Rushing Beat, also developed by Jaleco. The two protagonists later made a cameo appearance in another Jaleco game, Chimera Beast. The game was released outside Japan for the first time by Hamster Corporation as part of their Arcade Archives series for the Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4 in October 2020, ensuring its preservation for modern audiences.
