Lore & Background

The game is set in the fictional country of Atlasia, a futuristic 'light cyberpunk' world where anthropomorphic animals have replaced humans but refer to themselves as humans. Privileged citizens live under a dome protected from pollution, while others struggle. The protagonist, Brok, is a 35-year-old private detective alligator and former championship boxer, living with his 16-year-old stepson Graff, a cat. Brok investigates the death of his wife Lia, uncovering connections to a corrupt world and their own fates.

Gameplay combines traditional point-and-click adventure mechanics with action side-scrolling beat 'em up and RPG elements. Players control Brok and Graff, switching between Adventure Mode (exploration, puzzle-solving, interrogation) and Action Mode (jumping, attacking enemies, boss battles). Defeating enemies earns experience points used to level up strength, health, attack power, or special attack cooldown. The game features multiple endings based on player choices, and includes unlockable concept art and fan art.

Development began in 2016 and concluded in 2022, with previous working titles Tough BROK and BROK the Brawler Detective. The final title is a play on 'alligator' and 'investigator'. A Kickstarter campaign launched January 5, 2021, reached its €12,000 goal in 17 hours, ultimately raising €41,588. The script was edited by Disney pioneer Jymn Magon. The game was written and voice-acted in English, then translated into French and nine other languages. A prologue demo includes the first chapter; the full game has six chapters and takes 15–20 hours to complete.

Reader's Guide

BROK the InvestiGator is significant as a pioneering hybrid of point-and-click adventure and beat 'em up genres, marketed as a 'Punch n' Click' game. Its successful Kickstarter campaign, raising over triple its goal, demonstrated strong community interest in indie genre-blending projects. The game's accessibility features, including text-to-speech audio descriptions for blind gamers and skippable puzzles/fights, set a notable precedent for inclusive design in indie games. Its art style, inspired by 1980s–early 1990s western animation (particularly The Disney Afternoon), and the involvement of Disney writer Jymn Magon, gave it a nostalgic appeal. The game's legacy includes a free-to-play spin-off visual novel, BROK - Natal Tail, A New Christmas (2024), and downloadable content The Brawl Bar (2025). The game's multiple endings and unlockable extras encourage replayability, while its local co-op mode (added in 2023) expanded its social play value. The mobile release with a free first chapter and paywalled rest reflects a modern monetization strategy. Overall, BROK the InvestiGator stands as a creative fusion of genres that pushed boundaries for indie game design and accessibility.
